Our family enjoys carving out time on our trips to the island to see Volcanoes National Park. It's a breathtaking area no matter what status the volcano is in at the time of your visit. It's a calming place to visit. Here's a link to help you plan out your itinerary to the park. https://www.nps.gov/havo/index.htm
Be mindful of all the warnings/alerts before starting out on the road. The east side of the island rains a lot and can get chilly especially if you add on a trip up to Mauna Kea. Dress and pack accordingly. Bring a poncho, umbrella and light jacket to keep warm.
